Members of the Steering Committee at a planning session for the fall fundraiser and gala event weekend, scheduled for Oct. 1-2, 2010.

Make your plans now to join us Oct. 1 and 2 for a festive weekend. First Prez's Fabulous Marketplace will offer fun, fellowship, and a chance to help our church.
HOURS OF OPERATION
First Prez's Fabulous Marketplace is a huge collection of items for purchase donated by or handmade by church members, or offered by local vendors. All proceeds will benefit the Our Hope for Years to Come capital campaign.
The marketplace will feature more than a dozen booths from downtown vendors who've agreed to donate a portion of their proceeds to First Presbyterian. In addition, First Prez's Fabulous Marketplace will feature:
The Fall Fundraiser Steering Committee has lots of great ideas to make it a fun weekend. But we need your help to make sure our fundraiser really takes off. Our marketplace will offer the generous contributions of many talented individuals, including chefs, canners, bakers, knitters, and babysitters. Support our Marketplace by coming out on Friday or Saturday, by telling your friends about it (or sending them a copy of our flyer, or volunteering some of your time.
Click here for frequently updated information about our specific needs for volunteers and donated items.
Our parking lot, which extends between Morgan and Hargett Streets, will be reserved for vendors, volunteers, daycare staff (on Friday), and pre-ordered lunch takeout customers. We regret that we probably won't have a spot for you in our lot. However, our volunteers will be ready to help you find a place to park.
Downtown Raleigh is full of parking options, and our volunteers at the Hargett Street entrance will have copies of a map to help you out. We highly recommend parking in the large, well-designed Fayetteville Street Deck, which is in the block bounded by Hargett, Morgan, Fayetteville, and S. Wilmington Streets. This lot usually has a large number of spaces available and is a pleasant block-and-a-half walk from the church. Also keep in mind that on Saturday morning, the City Deck will be empty and free on-street parking will be abundant.
Other parking lots throughout downtown are accessible by the R-Line, a free hybrid bus which circulates every 10-15 minutes all day and most of the night, and has two stops within a block of the Church (by the Campbell Law School and by the old Capitol Building).
If you live in or near Glenaire or Capital Towers, you're in luck: We will be running a free bus service to those residences. We plan to have a bus pickup at Glenaire at 10:00 a.m. that returns at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the bus will pick up at Glenaire at 9:00 a.m. and return at 11:00 a.m.
Capital Towers pickup times will be determined based on residents' preferences. Capital Towers residents should come to an agreement among those requiring transportion and call the church office (821-5750) to make arrangements for pickup and drop-off times.
Who has already signed up to help with First Prez's Fabulous Marketplace?
Our committee is already large and growing. Event Co-Chairs are Linda Burwell and Rita Tolley. Here's a list of subcommittees and their chairs:
Bet you see something in that list that you're good at. Volunteer today, or wait until closer to time. We need folks at all stages of this project.
Our fundraiser is already starting to come together, and it's already shaping up to be a lot of fun. But the Capital Campaign and First Prez's Fabulous Marketplace depend on you! In this section, we'll list some ways you can
contribute items for sale or some of your time, both now, in the planning phase, and during the gala weekend (Oct. 1-2).
Do you know someone who works or lives downtown and who would enjoy shopping at our Fabulous Marketplace? Here's a flyer you can pass along to your friends. It includes a comprehensive list of activities and the vendors who'll be peddling their wares.
Yard Sale Items
Starting now, you can lend a hand by gathering up yard-sale items that you're willing to donate to First Presbyterian. Now's the time to start putting aside items you might ordinarily drop off at a local agency's collection site.
Closer to time, we'll start accepting your donations of yard sale TREASURES for our Bargain Basement event.
We'll sell any clean, serviceable, appealing items you no longer need and want to get out of your closets, garage, attic, or basement. Keep collecting them
until the end of September, and then deliver your items to the church. A Bargain Basement representative will receive them from 8:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 30; or from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
on Fri., Oct. 1.
Early storage can also be arranged with Dena Anderson. We'll provide receipts you can use to claim a tax credit for donated items.
Things we do not need include the following: adult clothing, computer-related items, outdated electronics/TVs, and books.
Used Costume Jewelry
Karen DeVane is heading up the Jewelry Sale. She's looking for donations of gently-used costume jewelry. Please take a few moments to go through your old jewelry boxes and bring in any "jewels" that you are willing to part with. She's also looking for volunteers to help with the Jewelry Sale.
Donations of jewelry can be dropped off in the Church Library or at the receptionist desk on the second floor of the Ed Stock Building. You can call Karen DeVane if you have questions or if you would like to volunteer.
Children's Clothing
The First Prez's Fabulous Marketplace KIDZ Boutique is already accepting donations! Three collection boxes are already available at the church to make it easier for you to clean out the kids' closets while you restock at the Back-to-school sales. The Boutique will offer gently used children’s clothing, girls' or boys', sizes infant through 16. We are also accepting used Halloween costumes.
Please drop off clothing that's in very good condition—with no stains, picks, or tears. The goal is to create a consignment-quality sale.
All donations are deductible as charitable donations. The KIDZ Boutique committee will provide receipts for tax purposes. As you do your summer cleaning, we encourage you to shift your donations to this fundraiser if you are otherwise inclined to give your clothing to other charities.
KIDZ Boutique co-chairs are Hope Carmichael and Toccoa Mayhew. If you need pick-up service, call one of these ladies. They can take your items right away!
They've reserved some storage space and are anxious to receive your donated items. Or just look for KIDZ Boutique cartons in the Stock Building, Memorial Hall, and outside the Library.
Kitchen Pantry
Homemade From Our Kitchen to Yours: Martha Crisp is heading up an effort to collect and sell canned and home-preserved food to benefit our capital campaign. For you gardeners who are harvesting crops this summer, please consider putting aside some of your canned goods or other items that could be sold at our Marketplace Kitchen Pantry. Contact her with your questions or ideas for this effort.
Woodworkers Shop
Calling all woodworkers! Gerry Rogers would like to hear from you if you are willing to make some wooden items to sell. If you are stumped about what to make, he’ll be glad to offer suggestions. Items suitable for the garden area, such as birdhouses and other yard décor, are the kinds of things we need, as well as other items you enjoy making. Bird house replicas of the church would be hot sellers!
