Mission Statement: The
First Presbyterian Church Child Development Center provides a stimulating
and nurturing learning environment where the developmental needs of each
child are met through play, creative learning, and spiritual growth in a
Christian setting.
We strive to help every child grow as an individual while providing a warm
and loving environment that still meets the highest standards of care.
The First Presbyterian Church
Child Development Center (CDC) opened on November 1, 2001. We are sponsored
by First Presbyterian Church in downtown Raleigh, NC and housed in the Ed
Stock Building on the church grounds.
One of the unique features of the FPC CDC is its role in the wider community
of First Presbyterian Church. First Presbyterian considers the Child Development
Center to be an absolutely vital part of its mission in the Raleigh area,
as well as a wonderful service for member families seeking quality childcare
and spiritual support. The strong commitment on the part of this dynamic,
growing church is one of our greatest assets. Our students instantly become
part of a supportive, loving, Christian community upon enrollment.
The CDC is governed by an Advisory Board composed of 10-12 members. Advisory
Board members include church officers, parents of children enrolled in the
CDC, church members, and members of the community at large.
The Advisory Board meets once a month or as necessary to discuss any issues
that might arise.
Our facility is open year-round. It is closed for major holidays, such as
Good Friday, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
We have 16 full-time staff members
and one part-time staff member, plus three foster grandparents, substitutes,
and parent volunteers.
All of the teachers at the First Presbyterian Church Child Development Center
have at least earned the NC Early Childhood Credential. One of our teachers
has a four-year degree in child development, while three have a certificate
in child development.
Currently, we are assisting interested teachers in taking college courses
to help them gain additional expertise and/or certifications.
Each year, our staff attend the NCAEYC (North Carolina Association for the
Education of Young Children) Conference in Greensboro to get up-to-date
information and ideas to enrich our curriculum, and to network with others
in our field.
All of our teachers are CPR/First Aid certified annually.
Foster grandparents join us courtesy of the Community Services Department
of the City of Raleigh. They have all received a minimum of 40 hours of
orientation and pre-service training, including 20 hours in a classroom
setting, provided by Foster Grandparent Program staff, and 20 hours of on-the-job
training. They make a longterm commitment to the Child Development Center
and to our children. For more information about the Foster Grandparents
Program, see their page on the City
of Raleigh Web site.
The State of North Carolina granted us a 4-star license under its star-rated system this past year. At that time, the inspectors informed us that we nearly qualified for a 5-star rating (the highest possible rating), except that our playground was too small.
Enrollment is open to any child,
ages 6 weeks to 5 years. However, we currently have a waiting list, which,
on average, means an approximately 9-month wait for a space to open. When
a space does become available, preference is given to members of First Presbyterian
who have a child on the waiting list.
Our enrollment is capped at 62 students.
We have the following staff member-to-child ratios:
We provide our children with
two nourishing snacks and a lunch daily. While lunch is catered by Wake
County Public Schools, snacks are prepared by our staff.
We are open Monday through Friday, 7:30 am - 5:30 pm.
