The Outreach
and Ministries pages offer plenty of opportunities
for volunteering at First Presybyterian Church. However, on this page you’ll
find specific calls for volunteers to fill in for specific programs or ministries.
Volunteers from First Presbyterian
donate time, talents, and money to this international charity. For more
information about the Habitat for Humanity organization, including its mission
and goals, see their Web
site. Or check the Wake County Habitat local affiliate’s Web
site.
FPC and White Memorial Presbyterian Church are teaming together again to begin a new Habitat home. We have had a wonderful working relationship with them and
have built homes together for many many years; you will notice the warm affection fostered among our team members within a few minutes on the site. We love to build homes together, and it shows.
This year, we will be building a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home. It is a great plan and should provide the homeowners a very nice place to raise their four children. Click here to see the plan. The house is located at 208 Cooke Street in Raleigh, Lot #2.
Our Activities Web page provides all the information you need to better understand
how you can be a volunteer for FPC Habitat. If you have any questions that are not answered here, contact .
Volunteers from FPC and White Memorial are also responsible for providing lunches for the
workers on alternating Saturdays. Contact
,
Director of Outreach, for information on how you can help.
Several of our generous volunteers can no longer cook for
us on Sunday evening for our youth group and Pathfinders activities. We provide Sunday night meals for
the kids, and we rely on our volunteer cooks. It’s a great
way to get to know other church members and a
much appreciated service to the children and
their families.
Please contact the church office and leave a message for Louise Gilfillan if interested.
The church office is so efficient and filled with competent
staff that it's easy to take it for granted. But the church office is in need of volunteer assistance,
too. Consider contributing your time and talents to the church by serving as a volunteer receptionist. Help
the church out, and get valuable office experience, too!
We are looking for people who can spare four hours/month answering phones. Some days are busy,
and some are not. You can bring a book to read or notes to write when things are calm.
We’d love for someone to take a monthly timeslot, but we are also willing to call volunteers on an
as-needed basis. Work times are 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
or 12:30 – 4:30 p.m.
You can call the church office at 821–5750 or contact Karen Williams for details.
We at FPC participate in the
Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network, a service to the
homeless in our community.
WIHN places qualified families in temporary housing for one-week periods. Our most recent turn
to host families in our facilities was in June. We provide
food, shelter, and transportation for these families during our designated timeslot.
Volunteers are needed in the following areas:
Close to our designated hosting dates, a sign-up board will be posted near the church
library, along with additional information about the program. You can even sign up via e-mail. Send a note
to to volunteer or
just ask a question.
One other urgent need: quilted mattress covers for 16 twin beds. The WIHN mattresses
are covered in plastic. A cotton quilted mattress cover would soften each mattress and
reduce noise from the plastic. After each WIHN hosting event, the covers will be removed from
the mattresses, cleaned, and stored for future use. A suitable cover would cost $12 or more,
but we would gratefully accept handmade covers as well. Drop-off boxes are located at the
entranceways to Memorial Hall and the Ed Stock Building. Monetary contributions are also accepted
for this purpose.
As always, we thank you for your continued support of the WIHN program. Be
sure to check our Outreach page for more information
about the program.
The Friendship
Fund is a particularly busy ministry. In eight weeks alone, we answered
over 300 phone calls, made over 150 appointments, interviewed 105 people
and helped 91 clients with bills.
Volunteers make this program work. Please consider volunteering once or
twice a month, or even weekly. We see clients Tuesdays and Wednesdays from
9:30 – 11:30 a.m. More volunteers would allow us to see clients an
additional morning each week.

Middle and High school youth,
if you like to work with young children, consider becoming a Shepherd’s
Helper. Children’s Church is a special worship service geared toward
children from kindergarten age through second grade. One of our goals is
to help them learn to "be still and know" during story time. And
we offer our children an opportunity for free expression to reflect on the
story or parable used in the service. We need a few assistants to help us
organize these activities and keep the children on track.
Children’s Church meets most Sundays. It begins when the children
leave the sanctuary after the "Moment With Children" (children’s
sermon). Part of your responsibility as a shepherd’s helper would
be to accompany the children down the hall and encourage them as they learn
that being still doesn’t always mean doing nothing.
If you are interested in serving as a shepherd’s helper during Children’s
Church, contact Helen LaVere or Susan Johnson.
Lay readers ages youth to senior adult are needed for both the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship services. Typically, lay readers are asked to read a short selection from scripture to illuminate the pastor’s sermon. If you are interested in serving as a lay reader, a schedule is available for you to sign up in the Anderson Session Room.
We are always looking for volunteers
to help out in the Nursery Division of our
Church School.
If you're envisioning Daniel in the lion's den, don't worry--paid staff
are always paired with volunteers, so you'll have plenty of help with our
little dears. You can play with the children, sing songs with them, help
them with an art project, or even do an age-appropriate Bible lesson.
Timeslots needing volunteer caregivers include 9:45 to 10:45
(during the Church School hour) or 10:45 to noon (during worship).
If you can't commit to a couple of hours a quarter, you can sign up to be on
the substitute list, willing to show up in a pinch.
Kelly Thompson is this year's coordinator.

schedule for the nursery.
